Eagles Win Home Opener
Season 2 of the rejuvenated SMA Eagles soccer team started with a decisive win over the team from Southern Victoria High School (Vikings). The SMA team of grade 7 to 12 students performed well and opened the scoring in 10 seconds with a goal from Zizou. He split defenders racing through the lines and before people had time to sit down on the bleachers and look up – the ball was in the net. On top of that, he scored two more goals to have a hat trick in under 3 and a half minutes. How’s that for excitement!
The game was a bit of a runaway, but everybody contributed. The first half finished at 10-1 in favour of the Eagles with the Vikings finding the back of the net with a lone goal resulting from a defensive miscue. Other goal scorers in the first half included Obey, Lorenzo, William, and Henrick. The Vikings goalkeeper made a brilliant diving save on a well struck penalty by Meriem.
The second half saw Lorenzo, Amor-Ilyasse, Noah, JP, Obey and Steeve add to the score. Steeveβs penalty attempt had everyone on their feet as it snuck under the goalie to mark his first goal as an Eagle. The team moved the ball relatively well, but lost focus as the score became lop-sided and lowered their quality of play – it’s always good to work on the concentration as matches can turn on a few mistakes.
Other brilliant moments:
– William heading the ball away to save a certain goal
– Noah keeping his cool when abused verbally and physically by an opponent. That’s how you win.
-Lorenzo rushing to defend a teammate. Way to step up!
– Nathan beating players in tight spots like a whirlwind.
– Dimi was a rock for his first time as a goalkeeper. We sure like him in blue!
Huge thanks to all the coaches, Coaches Kevin and Bailey and Coaches Morgan and Richard plus all the spectators who showed and cheered loudly. We appreciate you.
The season continues with an away match Sunday at Carleton North and a home game Monday against John Caldwell.
